How to layer a living room
Begin with one honest piece and build outward. A short, unhurried guide to a room that feels gathered rather than bought.

The mistake most rooms make is trying to arrive fully formed. A matching set delivered in one go reads as a showroom, not a home. The trick is to let a room accumulate — to leave room for it to grow.
One. Start with the anchor.
Choose the sofa first, and choose it for comfort and line above all. Everything else in the room will defer to it, so spend your attention here.
Two. Build a contrast.
Against a generous sofa, set something with a finer profile — a slender side table, a sculptural chair. A room needs the conversation between heavy and light to feel alive.
Three. Finish low, then high.
Ground the arrangement with a rug that runs under the front legs, then lift the eye with light — a lamp, a tall plant, a single piece on the wall. Stop before it feels complete. The empty corner is an invitation, not a failure.
